Is Canva AI free? What's included on the free plan
Partly. Canva Free includes a small monthly AI allowance for tools like AI image generation, and it resets at the start of each month. Bigger allowances and Canva's top-tier AI tools need a paid plan like Canva Pro.

How Canva's AI allowance works
Canva splits its AI tools into tiers: Standard, Premium and Ultra. On the free plan, Standard and Premium tools share one small monthly allowance. Premium tools use up more of it than Standard ones. Ultra tools aren't available on Free at all.
Canva says the free allowance resets at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the 1st of each month (that's the evening of the last day of the month in U.S. time zones).
Canva's own pages describe the size of the free allowance a little differently, so we're not quoting a number. Either way, it's enough to try things out but not for daily heavy use. You can see what's left under your profile icon, then Billing, by hovering over AI usage.
What's free in Canva besides AI
Canva Free includes the drag-and-drop editor, over 1.6 million templates, millions of photos and graphics, and 5 GB of cloud storage. For flyers, invitations, social posts and simple slides, you can do a lot without ever touching AI.
What Pro adds
On paid plans like Pro, Standard AI tools stop counting against your allowance (fair use still applies), and you get a much bigger allowance for Premium tools plus access to Ultra tools. Canva Pro and Business free trials have the same AI allowance as Free until the trial turns into a paid plan. See Canva's pricing page for the current Pro price in your country.
Tips to make the free allowance last
Write one clear, detailed request instead of many vague ones. Use regular templates for layout and save AI for the one thing you can't do by hand. For photo fixes, see our best free AI for photo editing.
