Step 1: get the real Claude

Go to claude.ai on a computer, or search Claude in the App Store or Google Play and check the developer is Anthropic before you install. Copycat apps with similar names exist.

Make a free account. There's nothing to pay and no card is needed for the free plan.

Step 2: your first chat

Type into the box and press Enter. Write the way you'd talk: who it's for, what you need and how long. Then ask follow-ups like "make it shorter" or "friendlier, please" until it's right.

Claude is especially good at writing that sounds like a person, which is why it's our pick for tricky emails and speeches and toasts.

Step 3: give it something to read

Use the + button to add a PDF, a photo of a letter, or a long document, and ask Claude to explain it in plain English. It's on our list for summarizing PDFs.

Cover names, account numbers and anything private before you upload. See Is Claude safe?.

Step 4: stay under the free limit

The free plan has no fixed message count. Anthropic says limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and long chats and big documents use it up faster.

The trick: start a new chat for each new task. If you do hit the limit, take a break and come back later. Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month paid yearly) if you end up using it every day; see Is Claude free?.

Step 5: check one privacy setting

Open Settings, then Privacy, and decide whether Anthropic can use your chats to improve Claude. For one-off personal questions, use an Incognito chat, which Anthropic says is never used for training.

A calm first week

Day 1: ask it to rewrite an email you've been putting off. Day 2: paste a confusing letter (details removed) and ask what it means. Day 3: plan three dinners with what's in your fridge. Day 4: ask it to explain something you've always wondered about, then ask "explain it more simply". Day 5: write a thank-you note. Twenty minutes a day is plenty.
