Is Claude safe? Privacy settings explained simply

Short answer: Claude is safe for everyday writing, questions and reading documents, as long as you keep private details out. Anthropic says it only uses your chats to improve Claude if you allow it, and you can change that setting any time. Incognito chats are never used for training, and deleted chats leave its systems within 30 days.

Quick answers

Should I turn off Claude's training setting?

If you'd rather your chats weren't used, yes. It's in Settings, Privacy, and you can change it any time.

What's the most private way to use Claude?

Use an Incognito chat and keep names and numbers out.

What Anthropic says happens to your chats

Anthropic's privacy center says it uses your chats to improve its models in three cases: if you choose to allow it in your settings, if a chat is flagged for a safety review, or if you sign up for a testing program.

If you allow it, Anthropic says it may keep those chats, with your identity removed, for up to 5 years. If you turn the setting off, it won't use your past or future chats for future training. Anthropic's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro and Max, so check the setting rather than assume it's off.

How long Claude keeps your chats

When you delete a chat, Anthropic says it disappears from your history right away and is deleted from its systems within 30 days.

Two exceptions: if you press thumbs up or down to give feedback, Anthropic keeps that whole conversation for 5 years (separated from your email). And chats flagged as breaking its rules can be kept for up to 2 years.

How to keep it more private

Open Settings, then Privacy, and turn off the setting that lets Anthropic use your chats to improve Claude. For one-off questions you'd rather not keep, use an Incognito chat. Anthropic says those are never used for training, even if the setting is on.

Never type passwords, full card or bank numbers, your Social Security number, or someone else's medical details, into Claude or any chat tool. Cover names and account numbers before you paste a letter. Our Is ChatGPT safe? guide has a full list.

Is it safe from scams?

The bigger risk is fake apps and sites. Use claude.ai or the official Claude app by Anthropic, and ignore anyone asking you to pay to "unlock" Claude. The real free plan is explained in Is Claude free?.

The bottom line

Claude is as safe as the other big chat tools for everyday jobs. Take one minute to check the training setting, use Incognito for anything personal, and keep private numbers out. New to it? Start with Claude for beginners.
