Is ChatGPT safe? What not to type in (beginner guide)

ChatGPT is safe for everyday tasks like emails, recipes and explanations, as long as you keep private details out of it. OpenAI may use conversations to improve its AI, but it says you can opt out of that at any time in its data controls.

Never type these into ChatGPT (or any AI)

Passwords and PINs, including your email, bank or phone passcode. Card, bank or account numbers. Social Security, passport or driver's license numbers. Private medical details tied to your name. Other people's private information, like a friend's address or a coworker's health issue. Work secrets, like customer lists or anything your employer marks confidential.

A simple test: if you wouldn't put it on a postcard, don't paste it in. You can still get help by swapping in placeholders, like "[my bank]" or "[amount]."

How your chats are used

OpenAI's help center says it may use conversations to improve model performance and safety, and that you can opt out of having your data used for training at any time, using ChatGPT's Data Controls settings.

OpenAI also says data is encrypted while it's sent and while it's stored. That protects against outsiders, but it doesn't mean you should share secrets.

Watch out for fakes and scams

Use only chatgpt.com or the official ChatGPT app from OpenAI. Copycat apps and "free ChatGPT" sites can steal logins. No real AI tool needs your bank password, and you should never give one-time codes to anyone who contacts you.

Can you trust the answers?

Not blindly. ChatGPT can sound confident and be wrong, especially on medicine, law, money and recent news. Use it to understand and prepare, then confirm with a professional or an official source. For answers with sources you can click, try Perplexity.

The same rules apply everywhere

Claude, Gemini and Copilot all deserve the same care. Claude lists model training as opt-out too (Is Claude free?), and Google says NotebookLM doesn't train on your uploads unless you send feedback (Is NotebookLM free?). Ready to start safely? Try ChatGPT for beginners.
