Is ChatGPT free? What you get without paying (2026)
Yes. ChatGPT has a free plan that anyone can use, and it includes unlimited everyday text chats (within OpenAI's fair-use rules). Uploads, image creation, voice chats and deep research are limited on Free, and the most popular paid plan, Plus, costs $20 a month.
Prices checked Oct 2026.
What the free plan includes
OpenAI's pricing page lists these on the Free plan: unlimited text chats, limited messages with uploads, limited image creation, limited voice chats, limited deep research, and limited memory. It works on the web and in the iPhone and Android apps.
For most beginners, that's plenty. Writing an email, planning meals, explaining a letter from your bank or brainstorming gift ideas are all ordinary text chats, so they don't run out.
The free plan can only read a limited amount at once. OpenAI says the free plan's everyday model takes in about 12 pages of text in one go, so a very long PDF may need to be split up.
What you pay for
Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly. OpenAI's help center says there's currently no yearly option. Plus gives you more messages, more uploads, better image creation, more deep research, longer memory, and access to OpenAI's stronger reasoning models.
There's also a cheaper plan called Go, which gives higher limits on uploads, images and data analysis but keeps the same voice limits as Free. OpenAI says Go may include ads. Its price is shown on the ChatGPT pricing page and can vary by country, so check it there.
A Pro plan exists too, but it's built for people who use ChatGPT all day for work. Beginners don't need it.
Do you need to pay?
Probably not, at least at first. Start on Free for a couple of weeks. If you keep hitting the limit on photos, files or voice, that's the moment to think about upgrading. If you mostly type questions, Free does the job.
Teachers: OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Teachers, a free plan for verified U.S. K–12 educators through June 2027.
