What's free
Google's plans page lists these on the free plan ($0 a month with a Google account): Google's Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live (talk out loud), Canvas (a writing space) and Gems (saved helpers). You also keep the normal 15 GB of Google storage.
If you already use Gmail, you already have everything you need. There's nothing to install on a computer, and there's a Gemini app for phones.
Usage limits apply to everyone. Google says limits depend on how complex your request is, and they refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap.
What the paid plans add
Google AI Plus, $4.99 a month: about 2x the free usage, a stronger model (Flash), video generation, Gemini inside Gmail and Google Vids, and 400 GB of storage.
Google AI Pro, $19.99 a month: about 4x the free usage, Google's top models, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage and a YouTube Premium Lite plan.
Google AI Ultra, from $99.99 a month: the highest limits. It's built for heavy professional use, not beginners.
Should you upgrade?
Start free. The biggest reason to pay is if you want Gemini to write inside Gmail and Docs for you, or you need lots more storage anyway. If you were already paying for Google storage, AI Plus can be a good-value swap.
