Gemini for beginners: how to start with your Google account
To start with Gemini, go to gemini.google.com and sign in with the Google account you already use for Gmail. It's free, and the free plan includes chat, image editing, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice conversations.

Step 1: Sign in
Open gemini.google.com on a computer, or install the Gemini app on your phone. Sign in with your Google account. Google lists the free plan at $0 a month. Details: Is Gemini free?
Step 2: Ask your first question
Type the way you'd talk: "I have chicken, rice and spinach. What can I make tonight in 30 minutes?" If the answer isn't quite right, reply with what to change. Gemini remembers the conversation.
Step 3: Try four free features
Gemini Live: talk to Gemini out loud. It's great for brainstorming while you walk or cook.

Deep Research: ask a bigger question ("compare 3 robot vacuums under $300") and Gemini researches it and writes a report.

Free usage depends on how complex your requests are and refreshes every five hours up to a weekly cap. If you hit it often, Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) gives about 2x the free usage and adds Gemini inside Gmail. AI Pro ($19.99 a month) gives about 4x, plus Gemini in Docs and 5 TB of storage.
