How to use AI for beginners: your first 5 tasks
The easiest way to start using AI is to pick one free chat tool, like ChatGPT or Gemini, and use it for small everyday jobs: an email, a meal plan, explaining a document, a trip plan and a quick summary. Type the way you'd talk, and ask for changes until the answer fits.

Pick one tool to start
Don't sign up for ten apps. Choose one: ChatGPT (is it free?) or Gemini if you use Gmail (is it free?). Both have free plans that are plenty for these tasks. Our ChatGPT 10-minute guide and Gemini guide cover setup.
Task 1: Write a message you've been putting off
Type: "Help me write a polite message to [person] about [issue]. Keep it short and friendly." Then ask for "shorter" or "warmer" until it's right. More: best AI for writing emails.
Task 2: Plan this week's dinners
Type: "Plan 5 easy dinners for [number] people, under [$ amount], no [foods you avoid]. Add a shopping list." See plan meals.
Task 3: Explain something confusing
Paste a letter, bill or instructions (remove account numbers first) and ask: "Explain this in plain English. What do I need to do, and by when?" For long PDFs, NotebookLM is free and quotes its sources.
Task 4: Plan a day out or a trip
Type: "Plan a relaxed day in [place] for [who's going], with lunch ideas and a rainy-day backup." See plan a trip.
Task 5: Get the gist fast
Paste a long article or email thread and ask for "5 bullet points and anything I need to act on." See summarize a PDF.
Three rules that keep you safe
1. Keep private info out: passwords, card numbers, ID numbers and medical details (full list). 2. Double-check facts that matter. AI can be confidently wrong. 3. You're in charge. Edit what it gives you, and never send anything you haven't read.
