ChatGPT for beginners: a 10-minute start guide (2026)
To start with ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com, sign up free with your email or Google account, and type a request the way you'd text a helpful friend. The free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats, so you can practice as much as you like.

Minutes 0–2: Sign up
Open chatgpt.com in your browser or install the official ChatGPT app (check the developer is OpenAI). Tap Sign up and use your email or Google account. You don't need a card. See Is ChatGPT free? for exactly what's included.
Minutes 2–4: Learn the one trick
Good results come from saying three things: what you want, who it's for, and how it should sound or how long. For example: "Write a thank-you note to my neighbor who fed our cat, warm and short, 3 sentences."
If the answer isn't right, don't start over. Just reply: "shorter," "more casual," "use simpler words," or "give me 3 other options." ChatGPT remembers the conversation.
Minutes 4–9: Try three real tasks
1. A hard message. Paste a tricky email or text you need to answer and ask for a calm, polite reply. More ideas: best AI for writing emails.
2. Explain something. Paste a confusing letter, bill or set of instructions (remove account numbers first) and ask: "Explain this like I'm new to it. What do I need to do?"
3. Plan something. Ask for a week of dinners, a packing list, or a day-by-day trip plan. Give your budget and any must-haves.
Minute 10: Two safety habits

Second, double-check facts that matter. ChatGPT can sound sure and still be wrong, especially on dates, numbers, medicine and law.
