How to use ChatGPT on Android (beginner steps)

Open the Google Play Store, install ChatGPT from OpenAI, sign in, and type or tap the voice button. The free plan works on Android, so you can start without paying.

Prices checked Oct 2026.

Install the official app

In the Google Play Store, search ChatGPT and make sure the developer is OpenAI. Skip lookalike apps, especially ones that ask for a subscription right away.

Many Android phones also come with Google's own assistant, Gemini. It's free too, and you can use both.

Your first chats

Sign in with Google or email, then type a question at the bottom. If you don't like an answer, just reply with what to change, like "shorter" or "simpler words".

Tap the voice icon to talk instead of typing. Voice, photo uploads and images are limited on the free plan, but everyday text chats aren't.

Handy everyday uses

Snap a photo of a recipe and ask for a shopping list. Paste a long text from a relative and ask what it means. Plan a weekend trip. More ideas in How to use AI for beginners.
