How to use ChatGPT on iPhone (beginner steps)

Download the official ChatGPT app by OpenAI from the App Store, sign in with your Apple, Google or email account, and type or tap the voice button to talk. The free plan works on iPhone, so you don't need to pay to start.

Prices checked Oct 2026.

Step 1: get the right app

Open the App Store and search ChatGPT. Check the developer says OpenAI before you tap Get. There are many copycat apps with similar names, and some charge for things that are free in the real one.

OpenAI's pricing page lists iPhone and Android apps on the free plan, so there's nothing to buy.

Step 2: sign in and ask

Open the app and sign in. Your chats then sync with chatgpt.com on a computer. Tap the box at the bottom, type your question and hit send.

Prefer talking? Tap the voice icon and speak naturally. Voice chats are limited on Free, so use typing for long tasks.

Step 3: use your camera

Tap the + button to add a photo, like a confusing bill, a plant you want identified or a menu in another language, and ask about it. Uploads are limited on Free, so keep them for when they help most.

Don't photograph documents with full account numbers. See Is ChatGPT safe?.
