How to use ChatGPT to write a resume (step by step)

To write a resume with ChatGPT, paste in your work history and the job ad, and ask it to write achievement-focused bullet points that match the job. Then check every line yourself, because ChatGPT can add details that aren't true.

Before you start

Gather three things: your old resume or a plain list of jobs with dates, the job ad you're applying for, and 2–3 things you're proud of at each job. ChatGPT's free plan is enough for this (see what's free).

Remove your home address, phone number and email before pasting. You can add them back at the end. Read what not to type.

Step 1: Get the facts down

Paste your job list and say: "This is my work history. Ask me questions, one at a time, to find achievements and numbers I've left out." Answer honestly. This step makes the biggest difference.

Step 2: Match the job ad

Paste the job ad and ask: "What are the 6 most important skills this employer wants? Which do I already show, and which am I missing?" This tells you what to highlight.

Step 3: Write the bullets

Use the prompt below. Good bullets start with an action word and include a result, like "Cut supply costs 12% by switching vendors." Ask for 3–5 bullets per job, most recent first.

Step 4: Add a short summary

Ask for a 2–3 sentence summary at the top, written for this specific job. Tell it to avoid buzzwords like "results-driven" and "dynamic."

Step 5: Check and format

Read every line. Delete anything that isn't true, including numbers ChatGPT may have invented. Then paste the text into a simple template in Google Docs, Word or Canva. Keep it to one page if you have under 10 years of experience.

The first thing to type

The first thing to typeHere is my work history and a job ad. Rewrite my experience as 3–5 bullet points per job that start with an action verb, include a result, and match the job ad. Don't invent anything; ask me if you need a number. [paste history] [paste job ad]

Common questions

Can employers tell if ChatGPT wrote my resume?

They can often spot generic wording. Add your own real details and numbers, and edit the wording so it sounds like you.

Is it OK to use AI for a resume?

Yes, as long as everything on it is true. Treat ChatGPT as an editor, not an author.

Can free ChatGPT do this?

Yes. Resume writing is ordinary text chat, which is unlimited on the free plan.

Should I paste my phone number and address?

No need. Leave contact details out and add them yourself at the end.
