What Meta does with your AI chats

Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used your conversations with Meta AI to personalize the content and ads you see on its apps. Meta's own example: chat about hiking and you may start seeing hiking groups and ads for hiking boots.

Meta says it doesn't use certain topics for ads, including religion, politics, health, sexual orientation and ethnic origin. Its help center also says it uses AI interactions to improve AI at Meta, and may send a search query to select search engines to answer you.

What stays private

Your normal WhatsApp chats and calls are still end-to-end encrypted. Meta AI only sees what you send to it or choose to share with it.

Incognito chats: Meta says only you can see them, Meta can't access them, and they aren't saved after you leave. They're in the Meta AI app (Menu, then Incognito chat) and in WhatsApp.

If your WhatsApp isn't linked to the same Accounts Center as Facebook or Instagram, Meta says your WhatsApp AI chats won't be used to personalize those other apps.

How to keep it more private

For anything personal, use an Incognito chat. To wipe what Meta AI has from a normal chat, type /reset-ai in that chat, or /reset-all-ais for all of them. Deleting the chat alone isn't the same thing.

Never type passwords, card numbers, your Social Security number, or health details about yourself or anyone else. Meta also warns its AI can be inaccurate, so check anything important. More habits in Is ChatGPT safe?.

Should you use it?

For quick questions, writing a message or editing a photo inside WhatsApp, yes. For anything private, like money, health or family matters, use an Incognito chat or a different tool such as Claude or Gemini, and check their settings too.
