AI for seniors: a gentle, free way to start

The easiest way for seniors to start with AI is a free chat assistant like ChatGPT or Gemini. You type, or speak, a question in ordinary words and it answers. Start with small, useful jobs and never share passwords or bank details.

Which tool to try

Pick one free tool and stick with it for a week. ChatGPT is the most popular; Gemini is a natural fit if you use Gmail or an Android phone; Copilot comes with Windows. All three have free plans: see Is ChatGPT free? and Is Gemini free?.

On a phone, tap the microphone and just talk. You don't need to type.

5 good first tasks

1. Explain a confusing letter or bill (cover up account numbers first). 2. Write a birthday message for a grandchild. 3. Turn a recipe into a shopping list. 4. Plan a day trip with rest stops. 5. Explain a new phone setting step by step.

If an answer is too long, reply "shorter, in simpler words." It won't get tired of you.

Staying safe

AI chatbots sometimes get facts wrong, so double-check anything about health, money or law with a real person.

Scammers now use AI to fake voices and emails. If a "grandchild" calls in trouble asking for money, hang up and call them back on a number you know. Our Is ChatGPT safe? guide lists what never to type in.

A step further: AI agents

Some newer tools, like Muse from Meta, can do tasks such as reminders or reservations for you, and ask your approval first. Get comfortable with a regular chat tool before trying one, and never connect your bank.

Let AI read to you

If small print is hard going, Speechify reads web pages and documents out loud. Its free plan works with basic voices; see Is Speechify free?.
